Google Street View Going Off-Road

maya lang street view hiking

Google is everywhere! And this summer that everywhere is going to include over 1500 kilometres of forest and mountains in British Columbia.

The initiative is a partnership between Destination BC, Northern BC Tourism and the Internet giant, with the hopes of showing off the the beautifully unique terrain of Canada's west coast.

As part of the project Google will lend the organizations a pair of Street View Trekkers, which are worn like backpacks and capable of taking 360-degree images.  Volunteers will head out with the packs to tour the forests, trails, and mountains for which the province is famous.

Once the project is complete would-be adventurers from around the globe will be able to 'hike' through the BC's beautiful terrain. It will give the chance for people who may never make it to Canada to experience the beauty on offer.

The collaboration is going put the British Columbia wilderness in elite company. Other places that have been documented using the Street View Trekkers include must-see locations including the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and the Grand Canyon.

Below is an a video demonstrating the Street View Trekkers in action. It does a great job of demonstrating how images will be collected from the BC wilderness.

You can find more details about the special project by visiting Destination BC.
